Instructions for immediate dentures - first night
Leave the dentures in until we see you tomorrow. Do not take them out.

• Eat soft foods or soup.
• A little oozing of blood is normal. If you get lots of bleeding, leave the dentures in, place a rolled up cotton handkerchief or some pads (provided), between your teeth and bite hard for 15 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop please call us.
• For pain relief use Panadol or Nurofen. Take some as soon as you get home.
• Call us if you have any problems at all. Good luck and see you tomorrow.

Instructions for immediate dentures
For the next week leave your new dentures in at all times. Take them out only to clean them, put them back in as soon as you have cleaned them.

Rinse your mouth out with hot salt water - use half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of hot water. Do this 6 to 10 times a day for the next 5 days. The more you do this the better, as it helps with healing. Take the dentures out to do this, and replace them straight after.

Cleaning your denture - do this over a basin filled with water, (if you drop the denture it will not break). Scrub the denture with soap and water using the brush provided, rinse well before placing it back in your mouth.

The dentures are new and it will take some time for your mouth to become accustomed to them. The first couple of weeks you should expect discomfort, as the dentures will not settle in properly until healing of the wounds has occurred. Please be patient. Often it takes a number of visits and adjustments to get things comfortable.

Post extraction instructions
Always remember a clean and healthy mough heals more rapidly than a neglected one.

The following steps will help prevent bleeding and relieve soreness:

• Rest: Rest for a few hours immediately following treatment and avoid strenuous exercise.
• Rinsing: Do not rinse the mouth for at least 24 hours. For several days following treatment rinse the mouth gently after meals using a mouthwash made by dissolving 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Hold the solution in the mouth for 2-3 minutes and then discard. Avoid over vigorous rinsing.
• Food: Avoid HOT fluids, alcohol, hard or chewy foods. Choose cool drinks and minced or soft foods. Avoid sucking or interfering with the wound.
• Bleeding: Should slight bleeding occur, sit upright or rest with the head and shoulders raised. A small compress should be applied. This can be made from some cotton wool in a clean handkerchief, or a pad of gauze. Place this on the bleeding point and bite firmly on it for 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary.
• Pain: Any pain or soreness can be relieved by taking a pain relieving preparation, such as NUROFEN, available from your chemist. Use any medicines, prescribed or supplied, according to the directions.

If excessive bleeding, undue pain or other symptoms occur, contact your dental surgeon for advice without delay.

Smoking may delay or complicate healing.
